So I came across this article, though fairly old (June 2015), about how BIM helped save $20 million (the headline said $10 million, you decide) on a project with a budget of $295 million. The project was for the building of the Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB,) a joint project by 3 universities, Oregon Science and Health University, Oregon State University and Portland State University. It explains in detail how the use of BIM helped in creating value by bringing about huge cost reductions and fostering collaboration between 28 different teams. Here, though, are some of the highlights:
- Value of work hours saved because time for redrafting (which would have come out at around $10 million) was saved as changes made in the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) model was implemented automatically on the models for other specialists (Architectural, MEP, Contractor, etc.)
- A digital documentation process is estimated to have saved about $10 million according to the executive Architects, SERA Architects, and construction frim, JE Dunn Construction.
Apart from these, Clash detection could be said to have saved even more as the BIM model helped spot a piping error (as seen above) before construction even began. Had it been spotted on site, costs such as those for labour man-hours and material for those parts of the project would have doubled automatically.
